An epic disaster from the inside/out

Deepwater Horizon: The ”top kill” approach, in which BP pumped tonnes of heavy mud and cement and assorted rubber and metal ”junk” into the well in a bid to seal it, failed despite initial claims of success. In the next procedure, the pipe through which the oil is escaping, called a riser, will be cut and covered. But there was despondency about the tactic’s prospects, with a new relief well the only sure bet of stopping the leak. That will not be finished before August – The Sydney Morning Herald – SIMON MANN – May 31, 2010

I’m definitely not into politics, and wouldn’t know how to argue with anyone who is, but the way I see it, Obama, just as every other person on a presidential hot seat, is much bigger than just one human being because we, the citizens of this country and the citizens of every other land, are right there with them inside their dark suits. These people are driven by our society’s expectations that we have mandated them to fulfil.

Sure, it’s convenient to point the finger and say, “Shame on you, Mrs/Madam President whoever you are! Oh and btw, I have un-friended you!” but, now as always, I believe the accusatory finger can only be pointed at all OUR needs and at all of OUR near-sighted expectations and so I wrote a little hybrid tale loosely inspired by the legend of Pandora’s Box and the Seven Plagues of Egypt.

Deepwater Pandora Cracked Open 5, 000 ft below sea level

The admonishment, “Tame the energy of the sun, harness the energy of the wind, but what lies below must stay below or a curse shall be put on your head and on that of all who come from you,” could well have been spoken by Zeus if Hermes, back in 2001, had brought him news of the completion of the oil drilling platform, Deepwater Horizon. “For should you crack open Deepwater Pandora, a fire storm shall chase after gasses. Your generation’s greed shall be reflected in the sea and in the river’s waters. Orange under the light of the sun and orange under the mirror of the moon, they shall be. The sea and the river will smell of death and decay but they shall not be contained. The foulness you have put in them shall spread and spread to other shores.

Chaos shall follow. Your birds and all that flies shall lose their wings. All that crawls shall suffocate. Rain of oil will water your crops. Alliances shall be broken.

Brother shall come against brother. Harvesters of the sea shall fight and die to fill their nets. Clans shall know hunger and pain. Your most powerful leaders shall scurry like ants in a tormented nest.

Mud and consumed detritus, symbols of your polluting nature, shall be your only weapon for how dare you plunder what lies below!

Understand that the curse unleashed from Deepwater has signalled the beginning of devastating occurrences that shall reshape your thoughts as Earth, Fire, Water and Wind cleanse where you have soiled.

Your people will pull their hair and wring they hands crying, “Please, Zeus, make it stop!” but heed the signs Nature gives you as carefully as you heed my words for what your people have not been willing to give from the heart shall be ripped away from the shallowness of their pockets and from the depth their vaults for they have to be forced to look with unconditional kindness into their children’s eyes and into their neighbors’ eyes.”

On the spiritual level, stuffing the broken pipe with gross matter, more and more junk, to stem the flow of the world’s greatest environmental disaster and capping it with something as basic as cement is symbolic of how our own thought processes as individuals within the greatest herd on earth are similarly clogged up by emotional and materialistic junk. The *solution* to stopping the flow is a clear illustration of our unwillingness to create fresh connections within our neural net from which to begin rethinking thinking – and this long-engrained inability has a lot more to do with us, all of 6 billion + people on the planet today than with Obama.

Sure, this *solution* will fail, just as we keep failing in our search for happiness. And sure, this is only the beginning because, generally speaking, we, as a herd,   are more motivated by *taking* than by actively accepting from the heart.

Even though we have been giving material goods and dollars to business corporations such as World Vision that make it their ‘business’ to distribute our contributions to those who, we are told, need them, gone are the days of being mere observers as endless ‘acts of god’ whip up the people of far-away lands.

Giving unconditionally, not what we have in surplus, but what we are attached to, be that a material possession or an idea, is an act that seldom comes spontaneously.

Interestingly, at times of neighborhood devastation we DO give of ourselves – it is instinctive.

For a definite period of time, we reach out and *give* more than our time, more than cans of food and more than money.

We get emotionally involved.

We are galvanized from the heart to ease the loss, the burden and the pain of those in our community whose lives have been caught in the proverbial ‘eye of the storm’, but gone are the days of rehearsals on a relatively small local scale.

What we have karmically created for ourselves, we, who are a part of the greatest herd on Earth, are plenty more local opportunities, wherever we live, to ACTIVELY accept the many adjustments that events will make to our established personal routine, such as we have made it.

More and more all around, we will have to interact differently with strangers, friends or enemies not yet recognized in this lifetime, as our cities, towns and suburbs come under the karmic whip yielded by Mother Nature, but not only by her.

Rich or poor, many more human-made disasters and tragedies will shape us into a more humble humanity.

The time to simply donate money and the time to simply donate our time are simply soon to be over.

If the writing is not truly ‘on the wall’, it has certainly leaked out of Deepwater.
