Each of the four suits which make up the 56 cards of the Minor Arcana have four Court cards as well as ten “pip” or numbered cards. Unlike the “pip” cards which represent situations and circumstances, the Court cards represent people and the personalities of people, the people being either those known to the querent, those the querent has yet to meet or indeed the querent themselves.
As in astrology, the elements of Fire, Water, Air and Earth affect the personalities of a person, the same goes for each of the Court cards of the suits of Wands, Swords, Cups and Pentacles of the Minor Arcana. The Court cards consist of the Page, the Knight, the Queen and the King.
The suit of Wands which are influenced by the astrological element of Fire depicts a person who tends to be an extrovert and lively.
The suit of Cups which are influenced by the astrological element of Water represent someone who tends to be a daydreamer, introverted and quiet.
The suit of Swords which are influenced by the astrological element of Air represent a person who is both rational and intellectual.
The suit of Pentacles which are influenced by the astrological element of Earth depicts practical people who have common-sense and are generally good with their hands.
Of course there is far more to the Minor Arcana than I have mentioned so far which I will explain in more detail a little later. For many of you, having the knowledge of the basic structure of the Tarot cards will be enough to go on to try a reading yourselves, there is no better way to learn how to read the Tarot than by doing your own Tarot readings as the cards have an essence of their own which only reveal themselves and become apparent to you during your readings, no matter how many books you read or how good your teacher may be.
